Munich Sightseeing Marienplatz

Our first Station in Munich was Marienplatz in the heart of the Munich City Center. We had a lot of fun and great encounters with people from all over the world.

Public Transport to Marienplatz

It is really easy to get to Marienplatz in the City Center of Munich by public transport.

You can use any S-Bahn and the subway lines U3 and U6.

You can also walk to Marienplatz from Central Station "Hauptbahnhof" in just 16 minutes.

The Marienplatz in Munich

Marienplatz is the ideal starting point for exploring the city and is the heart of the city.

Marienplatz is in the truest sense of the word right in the heart of the city of Munich, in the pedestrian zone. From here you have everything in the immediate vicinity. Sights, restaurants, cafes and of course the Munich Shopping Mile.

The New Town Hall in Munich

The new town hall tower is 85 meters high and is crowned with the Münchner Kindl. Once at the top, you have a wonderful view of the old town. And: Do not worry - there is a lift!

Opening hours:
Mo- Sa. 10am to 7pm / Sun./public holiday 10am to 5pm
Last driveway 15 minutes before closing.

In the courtyard of the new town hall you will discover the wonderful design and the restraurant Rathskeller for a culenery break. Here is also the Tourist Information Office with all the information you need as a Munich explorer.

The Glockenspiel in Munich

You can see and hear the world famous Glockenspiel

Seasons:
11.00 am, 12.00 pm and additionally March to October 5.00 pm and one night game at 9.00 pm)

The carillon recreates two historical events of the city of Munich. On the one hand a knight tournament in honor of a noble wedding in which the Bavarian knight was victorious.

And the so-called "Schäffler", who first went back to the streets and demonstrated with their dance, the end of the plague.

The Mariensäule

The Marian column, which is centrally located on the Marienplatz, was built in 1638 to thank.

The reason for this was that the city was spared from destruction during the Thirty Years' War.

The Fischerbrunnen

Right on Marienplatz you will find the fishing fountain.

Throw in a coin and you will be lucky ... hopefully.

The Old Peter (Alte Peter)
Munich's first church, with a great view over the city center and to take great photos.

Hofbräu Haus
is the world famous beer hall with real Bavarian food and Bavarian live music.

The Viktualien Market
Everything from fresh fruit to exotic spices. There are also food stalls and a beer garden with maypole and much more.

The Frauenkirche
The Gothic church from the 15th century is the symbol of the city. Legend has it that the devil left a footprint here as well.

Odeonsplatz
Here is the monument Feldherrnhalle, the Theatinerkirche and the famous bronze lions in front of the residence, which bring good luck if you stroked their snouts.

Stachus / Karlsplatz
is often the first or last station walk through the city center, since just behind the Munich shopping street Neuhauserstraße and Kaufingerstraße begins. A nice place for a break is also the big fountain at Karl's gate.
